  • Technology Bites Man Again

    Technology Bites Man Again

If entrepreneurs didn’t know by now that Technology was taking over the business world, now it’s encroaching on the gambling casinos. We can’t even escape it on our trips to Las Vegas.

RADIO-FREQUENCY IDENTIFICATION is headed for Vegas. Casino chips embedded with RFID tags and are being tested at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino and will be displayed this month at the new $2.7 billion Wynn Las Vegas hotel and casino.

The chips will each be given a unique player code to track behavior and possibly get more revenue out of high rollers. It’s estimated that this could be a $100 million business by the year 2010.

There are two Vegas based companies that own the casino-RFID game: Progressive Gaming International and Shuffle Master.

Progressive’s TableLink, which reads RFID chips using table-embedded antennas and records the wagers on a dealer’s PC, is the system of choice at the two casinos. Progressive and Shuffle Master have also developed optical card shoes, which holds decks and scan cards as they’re dealt. Shuffle Master’s Intelligent Shoe is already getting rave reviews in Australia and Asia.

The cost of outfitting a table with the chips and antennas costs a casino about $8,000, but analysts predict that Progressive will score bigger bucks from the $6 per day per table it charges for its system.

One RFID chip costs a casino 40 cents more than a standard chip, but that margin will drop to about 10 cents in the coming months.

This is certainly a “technology leap” from the “eye in the sky” that we all knew about in the casinos, but I don’t think that even George Orwell would have thought of these chips.

Those of us who used the games in Vegas casinos to escape our computers and software programs, seem destined to be followed by technology no matter where we go.

Somehow Radio-Frequency Identification in poker/gaming chips just doesn’t seem to be what a good poker player expects. Oh well, technology marches on…and on….and on.

Get What You Want in 7 Powerful Steps

In my most recent columns we’ve covered issues about improving your business and marketing, but today let’s start right at the beginning.

You’re really getting tired of the 9 to 5 “rat race” and are thinking about chucking it for your own business. All your friends keep telling you that you could do for yourself just what you’re doing now for your boss. Why shouldn’t you profit from your ideas instead of him?

You keep thinking about it because you know that you’ll never be financially where you want to be with a weekly paycheck, but what business would you start?

Before you pack in that weekly paycheck, this is the time to evaluate yourself and your future and it takes some real, down to heart honesty. You want to change your life for the better, so let’s start.

Did you know that you have the potential to do and be anything you want? People have different perceptions of the ideal life, and it ranges from obtaining financial freedom to as simple as owning a new pair of sneakers. Unfortunately, many fail to reach their aspirations because they can’t get a solid, clear picture in their mind of what they want.

Take the next few days and embark on a fact-finding journey that will be a life-changing experience. Get a pad and pencil and start with this first step:

STEP 1 – KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU WANT – Be specific in your passions, then focus all your efforts on that particular desire.

Those who always change their minds and those who give up easily when the going gets tough will never get anywhere. If you’re a bit confused and aren’t sure what you really want in life answer these questions:
    1. What makes your heart beat with excitement?
    2. What makes you happy?
    3. What are you constantly thinking of day and night?
    4. What do you want to do with the rest of your life?
    5. What do you enjoy doing?
    6. What are your obsessions?
    7. What things make you jump for joy?

Write down all your possible answers to the above questions. Write down everything, no matter how silly or unimportant it seems. Put all your desires on paper that answers any of the above questions.

When that’s done, go back and circle five to seven items that interest you the most. Then evaluate and choose with your heart, not your mind, the one and only thing worthy to spend all your time and resources on and that brings out the best in you.

Now you may wind up with something like, “I want to play quarterback for the RAMS.” If you’re over 20 I’d say that isn’t too viable a choice, but you could do something related to football or sports. How about starting a sports publication? Or perhaps a sporting goods retail business, sports memorabilia business, or even a gym could be the answer. You can always read books and surf the net to help you in your search.

The most important thing to remember, no matter how “pie in the sky” it seems, is to USE YOUR HEART. Others may disagree with you, but you should be firm with what you really want. Others may offer comments or advice, but the final decision is always yours to make. You should concentrate on what you want, not what others want.

Remember you only get one shot at living your life. There are no replays and you don’t get to do it over. You may not do it right, but at least you’re doing it. Too many lives have been lived in quiet desperation waiting until – until they had saved a nest egg, until the children are out of school, until I retire, and they depart this life before “until” ever arrives.

Don’t go to sleep tonight without making a decision on WHAT YOU REALLY WANT IN LIFE MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE.
Then spend a few days evaluating how to make it possible and make a living at it. Begin living every day as if it were the last day you had – never leaving anything to be done next week, next month, or next year.

There will always be bills, things will always break down eventually and need replacing, there may be storms and earthquakes and repairs – but there will only be one life for you to live. It can’t be put on “hold”!

The final outcome of your efforts may be in the future, but you’re living each day by taking steps toward that outcome.

Safe Way to Start Your Own Business

Hopefully, you took my advice last week and you have a handy-dandy list now of what you want to do. We know you want to start your own business; hopefully you now know what it will be.

Being used to a steady paycheck from a regular job, with a family or other financial obligations, makes stepping out of your comfort zone a little risky. It doesn’t seem to matter how miserable you are in that job, the alternative scares the pants off many of us. There is a safer way of jumping off that cliff and it entails your current boss.

Your employer could be your ticket to a successful freelance business, if his business doesn’t conflict with your dreams. If you were thinking of starting a freelance copywriting business, you could negotiate a contract with your current employer for 50% of your time for the first year after you leave. This would give you a springboard for finding other clients while still covering your monthly expenses.

You’re probably wondering about now, why your employer would agree to sign a contract for half of your time? There are a number of reasons, and they can result in a “win-win” situation for both of you.

If you’re on good terms with your employer, chances are he doesn’t want to lose you. It takes time to train someone to fill your job and train them to the company’s way of being productive.

Even if he decides to replace you, it can take months to gather resumes, interview candidates, and hire the right person. During that time you can be performing job functions from your home office, perhaps even training your replacement and providing your boss with a smoother transition by minimizing the disruption to his business.

If you’re not on good terms with your boss and the company is downsizing, merging, or being bought out, you can help them avoid the unpleasantness and cost of firing you. You are actually doing them a favor by restructuring this in the form of a contract for services that can be “stretched out” for a period of time if needed.

Frankly, if an employer has to choose between letting you go and paying severance and benefits versus signing a contract for a time period, which do you think they’d prefer? Signing and getting tangible work and services in return without the costs associated with terminating you is a much better deal for him. The contract may even be allocated from a different budget category, making it more affordable for the company.

There’s another reason your boss may opt for a contract, and that is your knowledge. You are already familiar with the company, its clients and services. You’re able to provide the services they need and you understand what has to be done. Many creative people have used this logic in approaching their bosses to negotiate their first contract and go out on their own.

If you’re interested in starting your own business your current job can provide the security you need in your first year. What better way to get started on your dream?

Getting In On The Ground Floor

Tractors that steer themselves, property that knows it’s been stolen, airplanes that land without pilots – that sounds like science fiction. It’s all a result of the global positioning system which is mind-boggling. The industry is set to skyrocket and opportunities for the entrepreneur are there.

This spring the U.S. government will launch its first next generation GPS satellite to complement the 30 older models already in use. The aim is to create stronger signals, increased bandwidth, and lots of potential for smart entrepreneurs.

Since the Defense Department made its GPS signals available for commercial use in 1993, the market for location-based services has swelled to nearly $5 billion, and that’s just the beginning. The demand for these services is expected to double in the next few years. The three hot growth areas – tracking, navigation, and hardware promise to be multibillion dollar markets by 2010.

Though startups are springing up all over the place, plenty of technologies remain untapped. One of the untapped areas are automated navigation systems in family cars that keep drivers a safe distance from other vehicles.

Huge companies such as UPS plan to outfit 75,000 drivers with GPS-enabled handhelds this year to help them reach destinations more efficiently. Some savvy entrepreneur who offered similar navigation and tracking services could also make out nicely.

Consider AtRoad, a Fremont, Calif. firm that went public in 2000. It offers “geo-fencing” software that triggers email alerts if a company’s vehicle speeds or goes into unauthorized areas. They charge a monthly fee of $45 per head to track more than 133,000 employees of clients such as SBC, Verizon, and the city of San Francisco. For the fiscal year ending in December, AtRoad’s revenue grew 19% to $75.2 million. That was a whopping 12.2% net profit margin.

This lucrative game was also played by Steve Wozniak, Apple co-founder, who started Wheels of Zeus in 2002. This company combines GPS data with local wireless networking. The technology helps parents keep tabs on their children, or can alert IT managers when company-owned computers leave the premises.

The agriculture and manufacturing companies are getting a taste of the technology by a company that outfits tractors with antennas that pick up signals to automatically guide the equipment and control the amount of pesticides used.

There are companies that are using this technology to guide and navigate giant trucks around cliffs and mine shafts. The maritime industry is predicted to invest hundreds of millions in coming years to outfit cargo containers and ships with GPS receivers.

Chipmakers already cashing in are charging about $13 per device to put GPS chipsets in phones, electronics, and car navigation systems. And with a new federal regulation that is forcing wireless operators to include GPS in their phones and networking equipment, chip demand is sure to explode.

Remember the day when we said that expecting to buy drinking water in bottles was something the American consumer would never do. Pay for water that comes out of the kitchen sink faucet? How silly! Look at the industry that’s grown up in that area!

Entrepreneurs – the GPS opportunity is out there, if only you know where to look. Remember, you heard it here first!

  • Recruit Distributors To Sell for You

HOW TO RECRUIT DEALER/DISTRIBUTORS TO SELL FOR YOU

Everyone dreams of owning a super money-making business where
other people do all the work, and their only duties involve the
approval of sales and bank deposit slips. It’s the only way to go
    as a business owner.

The problem is however, not too many people seem to know how to ”
put together” such a business. What you’re really talking about
is an operation where you supply the product and other people do
the selling-A prime source with a dealer or distributor network.

Assuming that you have the product, you’ll also need a sales kit
and plenty of impressive, eye-catching promotional materials. If
you don’t supply or offer to supply materials with which your
sales force can sell the product, you’ll have a hard time
enlisting people to sell for you, and you probably won’t set any
sales records relative to your product either.

    Let’s assume that you’ve just written a book-HOW TO MAKE $100,000
PER YEAR AT HOME, WITH YOUR TYPEWRITER. Okay, in order to sell
this book, you’ve got to get the word out to the people that you
have such a book available. Advertising on your own is going to
cost you money, and unless you’ve got a good understanding of the
advertising business, you may never reach your full sales
potential-besides, the time and effort expended in finding the
“right” place to advertise, the placing of your ads, monitoring
your returns, and the frustrations of dealing with the curiosity
seekers, will quickly wear you out. Such is not the way you
envisioned your life when you got the idea to write the book, get
rich and enjoy a life of leisure.

So, just as soon as you’ve got your book written-the book is your
product-get some “bids” out to the advertising agencies in your
area, the freelancers, and the advertising department at your
local colleges. What you want these people to do is make up an
advertising circular promoting and selling your book. Now then,
in a different-maybe smaller-type, and kind of like an
afterthought-at the bottom of this circular, you include the
    phrase: Dealer Inquiries Invited…

Look over all the submitted circulars and choose the one (s) you
consider the best. then have a supply of these printed up at your
local print shop, obtain a mailing list of opportunity seekers,
and get them in the mail.

Just as soon as you’ve dropped these first circulars in the mail,
start writing your dealer/distributor letter. This should be
simply an explanation describing how you will dropship orders for
their customers, allowing them a certain commission on each sale
and, the price per copy you’ll sell your book to them in
wholesale quantity lots. At the same time, this letter should
include a copy of your advertising circular, and an explanation,
reassuring these dealers that they can reproduce this circular
with their name/address in place of yours on the order coupon.
You might even include a brief note that you will pre-print these
circulars with the dealer’s name/address and ship them to him for
a wholesale printing price. All of this boils down to your
supplying him or her with whatever is needed to promote and sell
copies of your book for you. The bottom line is simply that you
can only reach so many people, and sell so many books yourself.
With 1,000 people helping you-mailing out advertising circulars
and running small ads in hundreds of opportunity seeker
publications-your costs of running your business will be minimal
    while your book sale skyrocket.

Remember though, you need an impressive, eye-catching advertising
circular or mailing package for your sales force to use as their
own, and you need a clear easy-to-understand books in wholesale
quantity lots, and the availability of advertising materials for
    your dealers.

The advertising circular should be dual purpose- you send it out
to solicit sales of your product, and at the same time, recruit
dealers who are impressed with your advertising materials and
feel that they can make some money for themselves by promoting
your product. Again, this needn’t be much more than a simple
“throw-way” line at the bottom of the circular: Dealer Inquiries
    Invited…

Now that you’re organized thus far, the next thing is to contract
to run as many small DEALERS WANTED ads in as many of the mail
order publications as possible. Such ads can be either a
classified or a small, but eye-catching one inch display ad:

DEALERS WANTED! Outstanding new book. Sells
like wildfire! Everybody wants a copy! Make
$10 profit on every $15 sale! Details for
    SASE to:

Basically that’s all your “dealers wanted” ad needs to say, and
then with plenty of exposure in all the mail order publications
over a period of six or eight months, you should have hundreds of
people all over the country selling your book for you. Simple,
easy, almost cut and dried, but it works!

In building my own business from scratch over the past 10 years,
I’ve found that once you’ve established a basic
dealer/distributor network-or a list of people selling for
you. You can add hundreds of related products, and the orders just
keep coming in. Give it a try and see for yourself just how easy
and profitable it can be for you!

    $ Is Franchising Your Bag?

Are you wondering what the hottest franchising trends are? Much of the recent success in that area is traceable to two demographic trends: Americans are getting older and feeling pressed for time. Doesnt sound too bright, but it means booming business in franchising circles.

Now I am by no means a Franchise Guru. Ive never owned one, worked for one, or even considered one and for good reasons.
First, when I started my publishing and publicity business I wasnt flush financially enough to pay the freight on a franchise. Secondly, it seems too much like working for another corporate business to me. Things are done their way or no way, and you work for two you and the piece the company takes. That doesnt mean that it cant be your cup of tea, because many entrepreneurs love franchises.

Im not going to expound as a franchise expert, but rather Ill give you the facts about the hottest ones to look at if you like franchises. Despite the status of the economy it seems the most stunning growth in franchises in 2004 has been in the senior-care segment. Seven senior-care companies ranked in the top 500 in Entrepreneur magazine have grown a total of 370 units in one year, and almost 39% in the past year.

Experts say that despite the large increases, this market hasnt peaked yet. By 2010, 39 million Americans will be 65 or older, and thats almost 20% of the North American population. About 30% of non-institutionalized seniors live alone, per the Dept. of Health and Human Services Administration on Aging. Many of them need extra help at home or companionship.

As the nation ages and boomers turn 60, this segment of the population will grow. Elder care will replace child care as the number one social issue, predicts Jeff Huber, vice president of Home Instead Senior Care a franchise that grew from 356 to 448 units this past year.

The next hottest area is kids. Parents want their kids to have fun and be well-educated and will spend money to ensure this in good times and in bad. Childrens products and services segment of franchises have grown steadily over the year and become one of the top 5 overall categories in term of unit size in 2004.

Whats changed? Spending on children is now being fueled not only by baby-boomers, but by Generation X a group that has $736 billion in spending power. Another change in the market in the past 25 years is the increase in dual-career families. According to some in the industry, this is an ideal time to enter the education sector of franchises for kids.

Kids fitness programs are also growing. Caryn Burnier, franchise sales director with Stretch-N-Grow International, says they have added 50 units last year. We expect to see more children enrolled in fitness programs in the coming year, says Jerry Perch, vice president of sales/marketing for the 92-unit Kinderdance International Inc. franchise.

Last, but not least, the tech industry is rebounding from its nose-dive in the past. This is because there is an increased dependence by people and businesses on their technology. People need advice on what to buy and what not to buy, and what is the proper solution to their particular need.

Computer Moms International Corp., a training and support provider, has seen a shift in its client base since it started 10 years ago. The greatest demand for services from the Computer Moms group has shifted to the business market, and the group added 30 franchises last year. The experts claim that the demand for quality full-service training and tech support is vast now and expected to become greater.

Following on the heels of those three areas are franchises in the area of Home Improvement, Fitness, Income Tax Preparation, Business Consulting, Specialty Ice Cream, and Coffee. So, if youre in the market for a franchise type business pay heed to the up-and-coming hot leaders and let somebody else go for the 7-Elevens.

  • Write A How To Folio

HOW TO WRITE A “HOW-TO” FOLIO

Today, there are hundreds of enterprising men and women who
write simple research papers (known in the mail order trade as
FOLIOS) and sell them by mail. In the pages that follow, you’ll
be shown how you can do the same. You’ll be shown how to select a
subject, how to research it, how to write it, how to get it
printed, and how to sell it.

There are four ways to sell it. If you are new to folio
selling, You’ll be shown which of the four ways would be the best
for you. Read what follows very carefully and
very thoughtfully. THERE ARE NO CATCHES.
    EXACTLY WHAT IS A FOLIO?

    A folio can be called a booklet, a pamphlet, a report, a
newsletter, a guide, an instruction manual, a plan, a
manuscript, etc. etc. A folio is simply an easy-to-understand
manual which shows the reader “How To” do something that he does
not already know how to do. Most folios show the reader…

    * How to start or expand a hobby

    * How to develop new abilities or qualities

    * How to start a new business or expand an old one

    * How to prepare for a new career

    * How to make or save money

    * How to spend leisure time.

A well written folio is authoritative, factual, and helpful. It
should be written in simple, easily understood language. It can
be anything from a brief two-page mimeographed report to a
professionally printed book bound in hardback cover. People who
purchase folios by mail are interested in the information they
contain. Seldom do they care what brand of paper the
    information is printed on.

WHAT KIND OF FOLIOS ARE NOW BEING SOLD BY MAIL?

Pick up almost any magazine at a newsstand that carries
classified advertising and you will find ads written by people
who are selling their folios by mail. Here are sample ads from
magazines lying here on my desk.

“Be secure, confident, successful! Learn the secret of personal
    power $2.00”

“Why grow old and die? Li Chung Yun lived 256
years. You could too! learn how – $2.00”

“Secrets of the Spirit World! Only 60 cents postpaid!”

“Guide to Witches Covens – $2.00”

“Traffic Tickets? Beat them, step by step method. $1.95
    postpaid.”

“Learning Bridge? Send $2.95 for small 20 page guide.”

“Fluorescent Tubes rejuvenated at no cost. Instructions $1.00.”

“Learn the secret of making every pair of slacks you sew fit
    perfectly, Only $1.00”

    HOW TO WRITE A FOLIO

“10 Wonder Working Prayers. Enrich, strengthen your life!
    $1.00 guaranteed.”

“Enjoy camping inside your Volkswagen. Do it yourself Plans –
    $2.00′

“Homemade Cheese! Hard soft, and cottage! Make it yourself!
Easy. Delicious. Complete instructions, recipes $1.00”

“Toronto Area Job Opportunities – $1.00”

“Ship in Bottle. Instructions, Drawing. $1.00”

If you can produce a “How to Do It” Manual that is NOVEL,
INTERESTING and genuinely HELPFUL, you can do what the
advertisers above have done. You can print it yourself and sell
    it by mail!

    WHAT SHOULD YOU WRITE ABOUT?

    You should write

    * ONLY on subjects that REALLY interest you, and

    * On subjects that you already know something about.

For example, if you just love to cook, write a folio on cooking.
If people like the first folio they buy from you, they will buy
other folios in the future, as long as they are on the same
basic subject. If you write on a subject that really does not
interest you very much, you will be bored to death by the time
you get to your third folio!

Ask yourself what do I do with my spare time? Write a folio
    about THAT!

HOW DO YOU RESEARCH THE FOLIO?

Make yourself an expert on the subject! Talk to friends and
neighbors. Ask questions. Read books, newspapers, and magazines
on the subject. Ask your librarian for suggestions. As you
read, KEEP NOTES ON EVERYTHING. When you have read everything
you could lay your hands on, sit down and study your notes.
Read them over slowing and carefully. Then lay the notes aside
and think about the whole subject for a day or two. You will be
amazed at what your mind will do with the subject if you have
    research it thoroughly!

    HOW DO YOU WRITE IT?

Here’s a tip from a professional writer. Sit down and pretend
that you are a person who knows absolutely nothing about the
subject. Write down FIFTEEN QUESTIONS that such a person might
ask you. Then write out, in your own words, the answers to the
fifteen questions. Do not try to be literary! When you are
finished, lay it aside for a day or two.

Then re-read it with a red pencil, crossing out all unnecessary
words and sentences, inserting a new point here and there.
REWRITE the whole thing, and you will be amazed to discover that
your folio is ready to be published!

HOW DO YOU GET IT PRINTED?

Type it as neatly as possible on 8 1/2 x 11 WHITE typing paper.
Single space it, leaving two lines between each paragraph. Take
it to a local PHOTO-OFFSET printer who will make a few hundred
copies for you, very reasonably, usually within 24 hours. If
you have more than four pages, have it printed on both sides of
the paper. It will lower your printing costs slightly, and it
will save you extra postage in the future. To give your folio a
professional touch, have it printed on canary yellow, pink, or
    light green paper.

    HOW DO YOU SELL IT?

    There are four ways:

    1. DIRECT FROM ADS IN MAGAZINES AND TABLOID PAPERS. If
economically possible, sell it for $1.00 or $2.00 per copy.
(Occasionally $3.00.) Write a brief, eyecatching classified ad
asking those interested to send their orders directly to you.
If your ad is novel, believable, and of genuine interest, you
will be surprised at how many people will do this. If your
folio is about stamp collecting, advertise it in the stamp
collecting papers. If it is about Astrology, advertise it in
the Astrology magazines – to do otherwise is fatal. Be sure to
run your ad in at least three issues. If you have never sold
folios by mail, I sincerely suggest you use this method.

    2. ADVERTISE FOR INQUIRIES. If your folio is quite elaborate
and must be sold for $3.00 or more, use this method. Write a
brief, tempting ad describing your folio, and offer free
details. Then mail literature describing the folio to those who
answer the ads. Don’t expect more than one inquiry in ten to
    buy it from you.

Here are ads placed by folio writers in a recent issue of the
National Enquirer, who use this method:

“Never Won anything? Anyone can win sweepstakes contests! Free
details.” “Overweight? I lost 53 pounds. Easily.
    (Permanently!) New Method. Information Free.

“Troubles? God can help! Free information.” “Make money
clipping newspapers at home spare time. Details Free.”

    3. DIRECT MAIL. If you have written a folio showing how to get
inventions patented, you could purchase a list of amateur
inventors, and mail your sales literature to each individual on
the list. If you are lucky, you’ll sell your folio to about one
person in every twenty-five. Direct mail can be very effective
for experienced mail order operators, but it is usually far too
costly for the beginner. It can easily cost you several hundred
dollars for each one thousand letters you mail.

    4. SELLING THROUGH AGENTS. If you are willing to sell your
folio in small wholesale quantities, or if you are willing to
drop-ship folios for mail dealers, then you might find this the
most effective way to market your folios. Below are some ads
placed by folio writers in a recent issue of Specialty Salesman.

    “Sell Health Books Mailorder! Write”

“Sell Books by Mail! 400% Profit!”

“Sell Books by Mail. Complete dealer set-up. 25 cents”

“Free Newsletter! Sell Books by mail! We wholesale, dropship.”

Some of the above ads have been running ten and twenty years,
indicating that this could be a very successful way to market
    your folios.

    500 NEW FOLIO IDEAS!

Over the past two or three years folios have been developed and sold by mail. I

You are free to use any idea on this list. Items have not been hecked
to see if any of the titles have been copyrighted. If they
have, create a new one. Also, you are free to change the titles
around to suit your own situation. For example, “Summer Jobs in
Nevada” could become, “Summer Jobs in New York City”. I’m sure
    you get the point.

    Good luck to you!

  • Advertising Ad Sheets Equals Big Profits

ADVERTISING AD SHEETS EQUALS BIG PROFITS

Publishing and distributing a mail order ad sheet can be very profitable. They are simple and easy to produce, with most quick print shops able to handle the printing at fairly low cost. The important consideration is that you can use them to pull in advertising dollars for yourself, as a free advertising media for your own products, and as an exchange medium with which to get greater exposure for your own ads.

Before starting an ad sheet, you should plan it all out – decide on an interesting, informative title, choose a masthead, lay out your columns for size, determine if it is to be a simple 8 1/2 x 11 single sheet of paper or an 11 x 17 sheet folded in half. You’ll also need to know your production cost for the number you intend to have printed, and the postage cost to mail them out.

Most ad sheets start out as single sheets of paper, 8 1/2 x 11, printed on both sides. Usually, the front side is divided into three equal columns about 2 1/4 inches wide, with a 1/2 inch margin from the edge of the paper on both sides and top and bottom.

Assuming that the space occupied by your title, masthead and listing of rates for advertisers interested in placing an ad with you is two inches deep, this leaves you about 24 inches of advertising space to sell on the front side. Figuring a cost of $50 for 1,000 copies of such an ad sheet, printed both sides, and a third-class bulk-rate postage of $110, this means that your 24 inches of ad space will have to be sold at a rate of $6.25 each in order to break even. This means: You have to sell all of the ad space on the front of your ad sheet at $6.25 per ad – and then expect to make your profits from the sale of the back side of your ad sheet. Actually, it would be feasible to charge $7.00 per inch for the space on the front side, and carry your own full page ad on the back side. At any rate, don’t box yourself into a loss situation where you can’t afford to place your own ads in your ad sheet.

You get ads by making up an advertising solicitation sales letter and sending it out to as many mail order dealers as you can find. You can also run ads in other people’s publications, inviting the readers to check with you regarding placement of an ad in your publication. And of course, you’ll be wanting to work out some exchange advertising deals (whereby another publisher runs your ad in his publication, and you run his in exchange). From the experience of many, many publishers, this can be one of the most effective ways of getting your ads run, at low/no cost, and it is recognized to be successful in the field of Mail Order.

You probably won’t be able to fill up all of your available ad space with paid ads until you are well established – but no problem – first you fill your ad space with paid ads, and then you fill in the empty space with ads of your own. Some beginning advertisers fill a part of their empty space with complimentary ads for other mail order operators, send them a copy of the issue in which the complimentary ad appears, and invite them to continue the ad on a “paid” basis from there. Many of them will appreciate the favor and send you a check or money order to continue running the ad.

If you undertake the publication of an ad sheet, be sure to consider the possibilities of sending out 100 to 1,000 copies of your ad sheet to other mail order operators to rubber stamp their names/addresses as co-publishers and mail out for you. Thus, if you had 50 other mail order operators sending out 100 copies each of your ad sheet, you’d be talking about a circulation of 5,000 copies plus the number of copies you mail out. If you can get this kind of program going, you’ll quickly build your reputation as well as your circulation, and at the bottom line, your profits.

Some ad sheet publishers, once they’ve established themselves and are putting out an impressive publication, set up distributor networks. Generally, they run ads calling for distributor/dealers and asking for a $5 to $10 registration fee. In reply to the registration application, they send out a letter explaining that each distributor can buy at half price, so many copies of each issue of the ad sheet, rubber stamp their name on each copy, and send them out as their own. In return, the distributors usually get 50% of the incoming advertising orders, a half-price ad for themselves, and an opportunity to sell subscriptions.

The bottom line relative to becoming a successful ad sheet publisher has to do with keeping your production costs – printing and mailing – as low as possible, while putting out a quality product that other people in the mail order business will want to advertise in – while at the same time using it as an advertising/selling vehicle for your own products.

Everyone involved in mail order selling should have some sort of ad sheet – if for no other reason than as a means to an end – an advertising vehicle for your own products, an extra income form advertising revenues, and as an exchange media with which to gain greater exposure for your own products in other people’s publications. Once you’ve got an ad sheet, or any kind of publication set up and being seen by other mail order operators, you’ll quickly gain stature and a certain amount of prestige.

As with any business, your ultimate success depends on your own feasibility studies, and your “sharp-pencil” planning completed before you order your first issue printed. Think about it, weigh the pro’s & con’s, then go with your decision.

  • wisdom for managers

    566 words
Wisdom of the Ages for Managers

How are your managerial skills? Does there seem to be a gap like the Grand Canyon between you and your employees? Let’s see how we can change that.

If you gathered 100 experienced managers together and asked for their advice, it would probably sound like the roar of Niagara Falls until you got them talking in an orderly way. But there’s one thing for sure – they wouldn’t be saying much about “temporal rhythms,” or “competing values models.” Instead, this is probably what you’d hear.

“Don’t be afraid of the phrase, ‘I don’t know’.” If you don’t know the answer to an employee or board member’s question, don’t try to bluff your way through. If you’re at fault, take the blame. If you’re wrong, apologize. If you don’t have the answer at your fingertips then, promise to get back to the person with the answer within a specific timeframe.

“Never gossip.” If someone wants to gossip with you, politely say you’re not interested. The corporate adage, when someone gossips two careers are hurt – the person talked about, and the person talking.

“No task is beneath you.” Don’t think that as a manager you’re above anything. Be the good example and pitch in, especially if the job is one that nobody wants to do.

“Share the credit whenever possible.” A manager who spreads credit around looks much stronger than those who take all the credit themselves.

“Ask for help.” If you think you’re in over your head – then you are! Ask for some help and you’ll find most people enjoy giving a hand. Besides saving yourself from embarrassment, you’ll make a friend and an ally.

“Keep your financial remuneration from the business to yourself.” Discussing how much you’re making is a no-win proposition. Either you’ll be upset because someone is doing better than you, or someone will be upset with you.

“When you don’t like someone, don’t let it show.” This is especially true if you outrank them. Never burn bridges or offend others as you move ahead.

“Let it go!” What shouldn’t happen often does. You weren’t given the project you wanted, you were passed over for the promotion you deserved. Be gracious and diplomatic…and move on. Harboring a grudge won’t advance your career.

“When you’re right, don’t gloat.” The only time you should ever use the phrase, “I told you so” is if someone says to you: “You were right. I really could succeed at that project.”

Another aid to increase your art of management involves asking questions. If you really want to learn what the scuttle-butt within the troops is, ask questions as you travel throughout your organization.

Here are 10 questions that should get you all you want to know:

    • What made you mad today?
    • What took too long?
    • What caused complaints today?
    • What was misunderstood today?
    • What cost too much?
    • What was wasted?
    • What was too complicated?
    • What was just plain silly?
    • What job involved too many people?
    • What job involved too many actions?

Prepared with the above list as you travel through the ranks, you should get a pretty accurate reading of your business or organization. It will also get you the feedback from the customers that complained to your employees. What better way to know how your business is functioning, and where it needs tweaking?

Where Did I Put That List?

Working a job, or owning a business, and handling your personal life, leaves you very busy, both personally and professionally, but here are a few tips to help you.

Anytime can be a great time to get a jump on your competition, and exerting a little effort can differentiate you. Now is a great time to take advantage of planning early, getting organized, and taking the stress out of the season.

Lists serve you well during this time, so follow these tips:
Make a List and Check it Twice: Imagine Santas organizational challenge of delivering gifts to every child across the globe within 24 hours without a list. You should make a gift list of the people you need to remember, and carry it with you.

Carpe Diem Seize the Day! Now that youve got your gift list, seize the moment. At year-end, many of us find ourselves attending conferences/seminars dealing with our work. Take advantage of your travel to another city and give someone the gift of chocolate from Chicago or barbecue sauce from Dallas. If youre running from place to place, try shopping in airports during your layover. Airports have many unique and unusual shops, and you can kill time while checking off some gifts from your list.

Get Organized Early: Being organized now will give you more time to focus on work when everyone else is frantic and losing ground. Review your current goals and outline what you can do to affect your success for the remainder of the year. Make sure youve got a list that categorizes what you can do to help your clients during the busy holidays.

Take Advantage of Quiet Time: Many people take vacations during the holidays. There are times when your place of business or office seems empty. Great! Use the quiet time to get work done without the typical interruptions. Get a jump on your business plan for the next year, prioritize activities that will generate the largest payback, and brainstorm ideas with your group on strategy.

Remember Your Customers: Dont forget to remember your customers by sending a greeting card. A little effort can go a long way in building an ongoing relationship with clients by thanking them for their support and patronage. Include some personal comments about your successes together this year, and hopes for the coming year. A personal note to each customer is best and is a gesture often overlooked these days. It can go a long way to differentiate you from your too-busy-to-bother competition.

In this very technological and harried modern world many of the niceties of the past are either forgotten or never taught. There should be a course for every up and coming executive/MBA candidate that puts back the personal touch in business. Youd be surprised to learn how many of your customers remember the salesman or company that exerts that little bit of extra care. You never know who is going to give you that next giant order that keeps the wolf from the door. It might just be the client that got your personal holiday card and remembered it.

    Is Franchising Your Bag?

Are you wondering what the hottest franchising trends are? Much of the recent success in that area is traceable to two demographic trends: Americans are getting older and feeling pressed for time. Doesn’t sound too bright, but it means booming business in franchising circles.

Now I am by no means a Franchise Guru. I’ve never owned one, worked for one, or even considered one and for good reasons.

First, when I started my publishing and publicity business I wasn’t flush financially enough to pay the “freight” on a franchise. Secondly, it seems too much like working for another corporate business to me. Things are done their way or no way, and you work for two – you and the piece the company takes. That doesn’t mean that it can’t be your cup of tea, because many entrepreneurs love franchises.

I’m not going to expound as a franchise expert, but rather I’ll give you the facts about the hottest ones to look at if you like franchises. Despite the status of the economy it seems the most stunning growth in franchises in 2004 has been in the senior-care segment. Seven senior-care companies ranked in the top 500 in Entrepreneur magazine have grown a total of 370 units in one year, and almost 39% in the past year.

Experts say that despite the large increases, this market hasn’t peaked yet. By 2010, 39 million Americans will be 65 or older, and that’s almost 20% of the North American population. About 30% of non-institutionalized seniors live alone, per the Dept. of Health and Human Services Administration on Aging. Many of them need extra help at home or companionship.

As the nation ages and boomers turn 60, this segment of the population will grow. “Elder care will replace child care as the number one social issue,” predicts Jeff Huber, vice president of Home Instead Senior Care – a franchise that grew from 356 to 448 units this past year.

The next hottest area is kids. Parents want their kids to have fun and be well-educated and will spend money to ensure this in good times and in bad. Children’s products and services segment of franchises have grown steadily over the year and become one of the top 5 overall categories in term of unit size in 2004.

What’s changed? Spending on children is now being fueled not only by baby-boomers, but by Generation X – a group that has $736 billion in spending power. Another change in the market in the past 25 years is the increase in dual-career families. According to some in the industry, this is an ideal time to enter the education sector of franchises for kids.

Kids’ fitness programs are also growing. Caryn Burnier, franchise sales director with Stretch-N-Grow International, says they have added 50 units last year. “We expect to see more children enrolled in fitness programs in the coming year,” says Jerry Perch, vice president of sales/marketing for the 92-unit Kinderdance International Inc.

So, if you’re in the market for a franchise type business pay heed to the up-and-coming hot leaders and let somebody else go for the 7-Elevens.

    GETTING YOUR ARTICLES PUBLISHED

    Test Your Idea:

To lead to a sale, your query must convince the editor that you have a clear idea of what you plan to cover in the article, and what approach you re going to take.

So before writing the letter, think your article idea through carefully, and picture yourself describing the article to a friend.

    Find Your Angle:

Finding your angle is often a matter of narrowing your topic. A topic like Sports is far too general, narrow it to say, Table Tennis is better. Often, reducing the story to a single dimension e.g., focus on a key person, place, or event gives a salable angle.

When your subject is popular, you must give the editor a fresh approach. One way is to take an idea like Overcoming Failure and give it a twist to something like Failure Can Be Good for You. It neednt be exotic to sell, something as mundane as New and Improved has worked by adding a new ingredient to the usual.

    Research Helps:

While many queries can be written entirely from your own knowledge, a little research can pay big dividends by seducing the editor. Facts sell editors on an idea. Editors look for queries with many specifics: Dont just write that Last year millions of people suffered from yeast infections. Tell how many millions and why!

Research both the topic and the markets youre aiming it at. A common reason for rejection is because of inadequate knowledge of the magazine.

    Shaping Your Raw Material:

    After you have the basics:
    the idea
    the slant/facts, and
    the market

then youre ready to write your query. A good query starts strong, and never lets up until the editor is sold. Follow the two newspaper dictums; The five Ws (who, what, where, when, why) which explains the story immediately, and the inverted pyramid which emphasized putting the most interesting information first. Youll lose the editors interest if you save the best for last, and always remember EDITORS CUT FROM THE BOTTOM UP!

3 Main Sections to a Query:

    The Lead Paragraph
    The Summary
    The Authors Bio.

Each has a specific purpose: first, tell the editor what the story is, then why she/he should buy it, and finally who is going to write it.

The Lead is aimed to hook the editor and make them want to continue reading.
Once youve aroused the editors attention, move directly to a summary of the article.

Summary – This section should convince the editor that you know where you want to go with the article; it should outline the points you plan to cover or provide factual information about your topic giving only enough to prove that your story is real. Here you can mention your sources. Tell the editor wholl youll be talking to, and if experts are they on the cutting edge of todays technology. Also include here a working title for the article. Dont spend a lot of time trying to get a provocative headline, because titles are often changed by the editor before publication.

Authors Bio is where you sell yourself as a writer to the editor now that youve sold him/her on the idea. Dont be bashful; editors expect a bit of sell in the bio. Theres nothing wrong with saying, Im highly qualified to write this article because if a convincing reason follows. Start your bio with your publishing credits, and include magazines similar to the one youre pitching if you can.

  • your own business

    860 words

So You Want Your Own Business!

There are many reasons for wanting to start your own business, and most of us get to this point. Which one of the following applies to you?

    • Freedom from daily routine.
    • Doing what I want when I want.
    • Improve my living standard.
    • I want creative freedom.
    • I want to fully use my skills, knowledge and education.
    • I have a product/idea/service that people need.
    • I’ll have more time with the family.
    • I won’t have a dress code.
    • There are good tax breaks for business owners.
    • I’m a Type B person and work best alone.
    • I want to be my own boss.
    • I want to make the decisions.

Now granted, every one of the above is a good reason for wanting your own business. The rub is, that not many people think the process through – step by step. There are 7 phases to business planning. They are:

    1. Investigation Phase
    2. Planning Phase
    3. Start-up Phase
    4. Operating/Monitoring Phase
    5. Problem/Challenge resolution Phases
    6. Renewal/Expansion Phase
    7. Selling, Transferring, Retirement Phase

We’ll cover all of the above in my next few columns as a “Business Basics” refresher, but for today let’s take number one.

In the Investigation Phase you take a look at yourself and also your business options. There are careers that are suited to personality types, so the first thing you must discern is “Which personality type am I?”

    Duty Fulfillers
This is an introverted personality who is serious, quiet, thorough, orderly, matter-of-fact, logical, realistic, and dependable. They take responsibility, are well organized, know what should be accomplished and work steadily toward it disregarding distractions. They are careful calculators, and 20% of this group become accountants.

    The Mechanics
These are also introverts and are cool onlookers. They are quiet, reserved, observing, and analyzing life with a detached curiosity and have unexpected flashes of original humor. They’re usually interested in cause and effect, how and why mechanical things work, and in organizing facts using logical principles. They usually are craftsmen, mechanics, or handymen with about 10% becoming farmers.

    The Doers
These people are extraverts who are good at on-the-spot problem solving, don’t worry, enjoy whatever comes along, are adaptable, tolerant, and generally conservative in values. They tend to like mechanical things and sports, and dislike long explanations. They are best with “real” things that can be worked, handled, taken apart, or put together. About 10% of this type go into marketing or become Impresarios.

    The Executives
These are another extravert group and are hearty, frank, decisive, leaders in activities and usually good in anything that requires reasoning and intelligent talk, such as public speaking. They’re usually well informed and enjoy adding to their fund of knowledge. They may sometimes appear more positive and confident than their experience in an area warrants. They’re sometimes called “judgers” and “thinkers” and 21% of this group become legal administrators.

To go into each personality type would be far too complicated, but to give you an idea of the roles that personality types could fall into look at the following list. Beside the categories we covered in depth here are some simply broken down into Introvert or Extravert Personality.

Introverts choose careers that satisfy being:
    • Nurturers
    • Guardians
    • Artists
    • Scientists
    • Protectors
    • Idealists

    Extraverts are usually:
    • Performers
    • Visionaries
    • The Inspirers
    • Givers
    • Caregivers

The second part of the Investigating Phase is looking at your business options. When choosing the business you want to start consider the following:

    • Do you like to work with your hands or brain, or both?
    • Does working indoors or outdoors matter?
    • Are you good at math, writing, puzzles, blueprints, installing things or fixing things?
    • What interests you? What are your hobbies?
    • Do you like to work alone or as part of a team?
    • Do you like to plan things, or go to events?
    • Do you like machines, computers?
    • Do you like to drive or operate equipment?
    • Do you like to travel, collect/display things, give/attend shows, or take pictures?
    • Are you small, large, strong?

Make a list of your likes and dislikes. Keep a diary of things you do that relate to business and rate each entry from 1 to 5 based on your interest. Then prepare a list of your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and concerns. After doing all that, you should have a list of candidate businesses that are right for you. Then you can make a list of the “candidate businesses” and rate them from 1 to 5 based on your own chosen criteria.

Some criteria could be is it feasible, low in cost to establish, meets my objectives, will make money, there is a “niche” market of existing customers, or it will produce residual income to name just a few.

By the time you’ve accomplished all that, you should seriously consider visiting the local chapter of S.C.O.R.E. or your own mentor to use as a sounding board for your plan. Next week, if I haven’t dissuaded you so far, we’ll cover the Planning Phase.
